This week American Airlines sent me a really annoying email. They must be desparate to make some money because they wanted me to opt into recieving third party spam in order to get a few hundred extra miles. I sent an unhappy email back to them. That’s just the depths of low depths to which they’ve stooped to make money via affiliates.
I’ve appended their copyrighted mail within, as I think it is fair use.
My response to them:
I interpret this email as “please allow us and others to spam you.” The link “If you would prefer not to receive future e-mail invitations to join e-Rewards from other sponsors, please visit…” is particularly bad. It implies that I need to opt out in order to prevent you from sharing my private information with others who will then spam me, but claim that I have a relationship with them because I did not opt out.
I’m disappointed in American Airlines for being a party to this type of negative affilate activity.
I view miles programs as a way to retain loyal customers. But this and other things American has done over the last year or two make me less interested in remaining loyal. If this is the way you respect my being a customer, you should exect me to not be a customer.

This isn’t that different from the ones they send you via snail mail. I don’t think they view this as marketing any differently than they have in the past. I don’t think I do either.
There is a difference. The physical mail I get (very rarely…couple times a year) from them and their affiliates comes in one large envelope. I can discard it all. Or look through it quickly for something relevant and be done. A required opt-out email affiliates program promises to deluge my mailbox with a continual stream of daily advertising around my “real” mail. I don’t have to look through the AAdvantage physical envelope contents before throwing out the multiple ads inside in order to verify that a long letter from a dear friend isn’t hidden somewhere inside.
