Schneier on Sony’s rootkit DRM

It’s been interesting to watch how this story has progressed into the mainstream press and the reactions, from BoingBoing’s commentary in the expected pretty pissed off blow by blow fashion to the newswire articles in the print paper that finds its way to my doorstep each day.
Today Bruce Schneier’s weighed in with a nice analysis.
Sure Sony’s backpedaling right now, but this whole issue starts to set a scary precedent for how the industry will operate in the future. As Schneier points out these big companies will just come to the plate better prepared next time and with the proper collusion they’ll succeed at screwing us consumers. Their lawyers are probably already working on legislation to work through their representatives to make this easier.

I actually have the Susie Suh CD, but luckily I’ve never popped it into a Windows system. I sent it back out via UPS to get it exchanged just today. I was thinking, since Sony BMG is paying for the postage, you could really annoy them if everyone stuck a brick in the package sending their CDs back.

What do you think of that Susie Suh CD? I’d heard a few tracks of it on Morning Becomes Eclectic and liked what I heard and then I think there was an interview or something on Morning Edition. I’m such a public radio nerd.

I like it a lot. I picked it up because it was cheap and there were headphones to listen to, when I went to buy a Kodo album. Right now it is in CD slot #3 in my car. (Well, a non bit-for-bit copy of the CD, since I don’t like risking originals in the car CD player.)
It’s folk-type music, since there’s a lot of acoustical and vocals in her style, but she’s got a great voice and some nice songs. Some of the tracks have additional instruments added in. Anyway, I like it a lot.
You might want to check out Heather Nova also. Not folk-type music, but you might like it also if you like Susie Suh. I’ve got Heather Nova’s Oyster album.
