Northern Goshawk
I had what appears to have been a northern goshawk (though perhaps some other mostly dark grey Accipitridae with white/black barred tail feathers) fly right past my head while collecting some walnuts out back today. I’m pretty sure it was … Continue reading
The cycle begins again
We’ve about decided we are dealing with an avian predator, ie: hawk, falcon or especially owl. I suspect it is one still learning what it can and can’t haul off. In that sense maybe it’s less of a pointless, wasteful … Continue reading
Two more dead
Bossy and Cuckoo are dead. Same M. O. and still no obvious sign of canine entry to the run or typical signs of the chickens being out on an excursion. Cuckoo and Buffy were walking partners for sure, but Bossy … Continue reading

Our flock is now seven. We don’t know what happened. Perhaps dog mauling or a bird of prey or some other predator. I did hear a falcon or hawk calling earlier in the day and looked to see if one … Continue reading
Our first 8 Egg Day
We got eight eggs from the eight chickens for the first time. As the weather gets better and the days longer we are going to be swimming in eggs.
Chickens 1 year old
Our chickens were born one year ago. They’re all alive and seem health and happy. They’re laying again in earnest after a long winter slow down.
Cold chickens
Last night we got a dusting of snow on top of freezing temperatures (20.8F overnight). It’s not supposed to get above freezing today so I’ve left the light on in the hen house to make some warmth. They seem to … Continue reading
Chickens at 9 months
Here’s an autumn chicken picture. The birds are just shy of 9 months old now. They’re molting a little and egg production is about half what it was at its peak. The main pen is getting muddy at times, but … Continue reading
Chicken feed shelter
I’ve been meaning to make some sort of shelter for our chicken feed since before the birds even moved outdoors. But it’s been the dry season and it wasn’t a priority. But every day that passes puts us one closer … Continue reading
Chickens at 6 months
Since I was out in the backyard with the camera this afternoon I thought I should take a picture of the birds. They’ve grown a bit more since I last snapped any shots of them. We’re getting probably five eggs … Continue reading
